Lifestyle briefs | Humboldt Rose Society has meeting, plant sale – Times-Standard

Growing roses

The Humboldt Rose Society will meet Thursday at 7 p.m. at a new location, Redwood Acres, 3750 Harris St, Eureka. The meeting room is in the very front of the Raceway Grandstand building. There is ample parking. All are welcome.

Rosarians (rose experts) will give a presentation on rose diseases. There will be door prizes, refreshments and plenty of helpful information available.

Those who are interested in cultivating their knowledge of roses along with their roses are encouraged to join the Humboldt Rose Society. Annual family dues are $20 for an electronic membership or $25 for a mail membership. The application is available at www.humboldtrosesociety.org. There is also a wealth of information on rose cultivation on the website.

Plant sale

The Humboldt Rose Society will hold its annual rose and plant sale Saturday, May 11, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at 1525 Harris St. in Eureka.

Consulting rosarians (rose experts) will be available to answer rose cultivation questions. For more information about the Humboldt Rose Society or the plant sale, call 707-845-6645 or email jsaffell@suddenlink.net.

Birding walk

Sanctuary Forest and local birder and photographer Ann Constantino will present a “Birds of Southern Humboldt” walk at Southern Humboldt Community Park on Saturday, May 11.

Those attending will check out the swift and swallow action under the bridge and then decide which way to proceed based on scouting during the previous week. People can expect to see nesting behavior and possibly some fledglings for many species, including Lazuli buntings, Western kingbirds, several species of swallow, Western bluebirds, Bullocks orioles and more. White-tailed kites may be seen hunting. Everyone will also look for less common species such as the grasshopper sparrow and chipping sparrow, and maybe a pileated woodpecker.

Everyone will meet at Tooby Memorial Park, 934 Sprowl Creek Road, Garberville, at 8 a.m. The easy walk will last two to three hours. Participants should bring sturdy shoes, binoculars, lunch, water and sun protection. (No dogs, please.) The hike is free of charge, though donations are accepted and help us to offer this program year after year.

RSVPs are suggested for all hikes as details are subject to change. To RSVP, email anna@sanctuaryforest.org or call 707-986-1087, ext. 9#. For more information about the outing, call Ann Constantino at 707-296-8720.

Cycling at marsh

Friends of the Arcata Marsh board member and bicyclist Andy Feinstein will lead the monthly “Second Sunday Cycling Tour” of the Arcata Marsh on May 12.

Everyone will meet at the Interpretive Center at 2 p.m. for a 90-minute, docent-led tour focusing on the “Three Ws of the Marsh”: wetlands, wildlife and wastewater treatment.

Feinstein plans to ride around the perimeter of the facility (not entering the Corp Yard), including the head works, treatment marshes, oxidation ponds and enhancement marshes, while explaining their functions and relationships.

Everyone should bring their own bike; all ages are welcome. Heavy rain cancels the event. For more information, call the Interpretive Center at 707-826-2359.
